Charges for Commissions

Waco Glider in Burma, 1943
- Estimating charges for original work is very difficult as every painting is different both in size and content, and obviously a large work with little detail can cost much less than a smaller painting which is very detailed.
- Costs are therefore calculated on a time / materials basis. If the client can supply a required size and reasonable amount of information on the content of the painting required, a ball-park estimate can be given, but it must be stressed that this will be only an estimate. If the painting required is very similar to one that has been previously painted, then this may help to establish an estimate. It is also possible that the final cost of the work may be lower than the estimate. Please email or telephone any queries in this respect and undoubtedly a solution will be found.
- Time is rated at £5 per hour, this includes time spent on any research needed (which on some Military commissions can be considerable) so it is important that as much verbal or written information and relevant photographs or technical information should be supplied. Sketching out the original drawing, making a final larger drawing and scaling up by grid to the final size, time accessing Historical Websites, etc are a necessary part of the preparation of the painting, and are reflected in the overall cost.
At the time of ordering a commission requires a deposit of £30, deductable from the final cost the the work.
Mounting.
According to the wishes of the client, the painting will be done either on Canvas or hardboard/MDF. If the painting is done on board it is usual for the painting to be glazed and to have a mount. However, as packing and shipping a framed and glazed / mounted work would be prohibitively expensive, all work, either on board or canvas will be shipped unframed free of charge if the final cost is over £100, and up to a size of 70cmx40cms.
