This painting " Let's Play, not Slay " (Symbolically) depicts a football match between British Troops (6 Cheshires) and the German (Saxon ) Rgt that took place on no-mans land on the Western Front in 1914. Whilst this game did indeed take place, that, in itself is a reminder that war is futile, and if the soldiers of the day, on both sides had had their way, the war would have finished that very day. Unfortunately, the politicians would not hear of it, and so it went on. The Soldier on the left about to kick the ball depicts Pte Ernie Williams 6 Cheshire Rgt, and the soldier running on the far left depicts CSM Frank Naden, later in the war to be promoted to Colonel and highly decorated. The British officer having his cigarette lit by the German Officer on the right is Lt. Charles Bertram Brockbank, also 6 Btn Cheshire Regt.
