Coastal 101

Program Overview

This non-credit program is designed to prepare participants for the growing demands of the coastal protection and restoration industries. The program introduced participants to coastal protection and restoration job skills and prepared them for work in coastal protection and restoration fields.

This program includes an Introduction to Coastal Restoration Seminar and up to 5 industry-based credentials (IBCs) designed to provide participants with skills needed for coastal jobs. Participants who have compled the seminar earned a scholarship award covering the cost of the IBCs.

CAREER OUTLOOK

Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience with industry-standard skills and certifications, preparing them for careers in environmental science, construction, and coastal management.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understand the principles of coastal ecology and restoration techniques.
  • Identify common challenges in coastal restoration, such as erosion, habitat loss, and rising sea levels.
  • Operate an airboat in coastal environments for fieldwork and restoration projects.
  • Design and implement green infrastructure solutions for coastal protection.
  • Prepare and pass the FAA Part 107 UAS (Drone) certification exam.
  • Comply with workplace safety regulations in the coastal restoration field (OSHA 10).

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY -

Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program Scholarship for Coastal 101

This scholarship is designed to support individuals who have been previously incarcerated and are now seeking education and training in environmental and coastal studies through the Coastal 101 program. It provides a fully funded opportunity for a post-release individual to earn industry-based credentials in coastal-related fields. The selected recipient will receive full tuition coverage for the duration of the program, including all necessary supplies and training materials, as long as eligibility criteria are maintained. This scholarship offers a pathway to meaningful career opportunities in coastal restoration and environmental stewardship, helping individuals successfully transition into the workforce and contribute to Louisiana’s coastal resilience.
